Stavovske Divadlo - Theatre of Estates

Built in 1780s by Count Nostitz (after whom theatre was originally named) is Prague's oldest theatre. THhe Czech anthem (Where is my home) was first performed here as a part of comic opera Fidlovacka. This venue most often presents Mozart operas but other composers' works can also be experienced here. The theatre is one of the most beautiful historical theatres in Europe. Part of its charm, magic and value lies in its historical significance, from the musical career of Mozart to modern times. For the filming of "Amadeus," director Milos Forman requested use of the theatre as a set. But since he was not in good standing with the government, having defected in the 60s, he was denied any access to the space. Finally it was agreed that he could film in the theatre, if a portion of the film's profits would go towards restoration of the building. This is why it was one of the most splendid sights in Prague, even during the Communist era. In 1786, Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" was performed here, and in 1787 Mozart conducted the premier of "Don Giovanni". Also La Clemenza di Tito had its premiere in Estates Theatre. Theatre is located just beside the Karolinum at Ovecny trh 1, metro Namesti Republiky.

Theatre with English subtitles in Prague
Švandovo Theatre has introduced a pioneering innovation to enable English-speaking theatregoers to visit its performances being played in Czech. This innovation is the projecting of simultaneous subtitles. In Prague subtitles are used in other theatres, but only for opera performances. The subtitles are projected onto a special screen that is hung under the stage portal to avoid disturbing the theatre stage itself. This means of presenting translation is used in theatres all around the world.
Švandovo Theatre has chosen to subtitle five plays from its repertoire: The Tempest by Shakespeare, Martin McDonagh’s Lieutenant of Inishmore, Tartuffe by Moličre, The Marriage by Gogol and Killer Joe by Tracy Letts.
